OPINION NO.2

AI Has Made Everyone a Marketing Generalist. That's Why Specialists Matter More Than Ever.

There was a time when being a marketing generalist was considered a real strength.

The marketer who knew a little about branding, a little about advertising, a little about digital, PR, media buying, social media and events could confidently pull together an annual marketing plan, spread the budget across multiple channels and call it an integrated strategy. It was a valuable skill because knowledge wasn't easily accessible, and experience was often the deciding factor.

Then AI arrived.

Today, anyone with access to ChatGPT, Claude or another AI assistant can generate a marketing plan, write a campaign, suggest a media mix, create social content and even develop a brand positioning statement in a matter of minutes.

On the surface, it all looks remarkably impressive.

But here's the question that really matters:

Do you actually know whether any of it is right?

That's where the difference between a generalist and a specialist becomes crystal clear.

AI Has Levelled the Playing Field

Artificial intelligence has democratised knowledge. Everyone now has access to information that once took years to accumulate.

In many ways, AI has turned us all into generalists.

Someone with no formal marketing background can ask AI for the "best marketing strategy", "how to build a brand" or "the ideal social media campaign" and receive a polished, professional-looking answer. The problem is that if everyone is asking the same questions, they're often getting remarkably similar answers.

The result?

A marketplace full of campaigns that sound alike, look alike and ultimately achieve very little.

AI is exceptionally good at producing average.

Experience Can't Be Prompted

The real advantage today doesn't belong to the person who can write the best AI prompt.

It belongs to the person who knows enough to challenge the answer. Specialists have something AI cannot manufacture - pattern recognition.

They've spent years building brands, launching products, managing budgets, analysing campaign performance and watching real consumers make real buying decisions.

They've experienced campaigns that failed spectacularly and others that exceeded every expectation. They understand the subtle differences between what looks good in a presentation and what actually changes consumer behaviour.

That knowledge cannot be downloaded.

It can only be earned.

The Gift of Pattern Recognition

Specialists recognise patterns because they've seen them hundreds - sometimes thousands - of times before.

A seasoned brand strategist can spot positioning weaknesses within minutes. An experienced media planner instinctively knows when a channel mix won't deliver. A creative director can often predict which campaign idea will resonate long before the research confirms it.

Not because they're guessing.

Because repetition creates intuition.

Every campaign, every client, every success and every failure builds another layer of understanding. That's experience.

AI Makes Specialists Even Better

Ironically, AI doesn't replace specialists.

It amplifies them.

A specialist knows exactly what questions to ask, what assumptions to challenge and where AI's recommendations are too generic. They can guide AI rather than simply accepting its first answer. They refine. They critique. They improve. Most importantly, they know when AI is wrong. That is where the real productivity gains come from.

The Future Doesn't Belong to Generalists

AI has made broad knowledge incredibly accessible.

That's a wonderful thing.

But accessible knowledge isn't the same as expertise.

The businesses that will stand out over the next decade won't be those producing the most AI-generated content. They'll be the ones combining decades of human experience with the speed and efficiency of artificial intelligence. Marketing has never simply been about knowing what to do.

It's about understanding why people behave the way they do, what motivates them to act, what builds trust, what creates loyalty and what ultimately influences buying decisions.

Those insights don't come from prompts. They come from years of listening, testing, learning and refining.

The future belongs to specialists who know how to use AI - not people who let AI do all the thinking.

Because while AI can generate ideas in seconds...

Experience still knows which ones will actually work.
